About the Lasting Power of Attorney (Fremtidsfullmakt)
A fremtidsfullmakt is the Norwegian lasting power of attorney. It lets you decide who will look after your interests if you one day can't — because of dementia, another mental illness or seriously failing health. It can replace guardianship (vergemål) in whole or in part, and the person you choose acts on your instructions, instead of a guardian appointed by Statsforvalteren.
The rules are in chapter 10 of vergemålsloven, the Guardianship Act. The fullmakt must be in writing and say clearly that it applies once you can no longer look after your interests. You sign it while two witnesses are present together, and they sign while you are present. The witnesses must be 18 or older, and neither the fullmektig nor the fullmektig's spouse, cohabitant, parents, children or grandchildren may witness. If these rules are broken, the document is not valid as a fremtidsfullmakt.
This form writes the document for you, in Norwegian, with the wording the official guidance asks for: who may do what, whether your home may be sold, which gifts are allowed, and a witness statement confirming you acted freely and understood what you signed. It checks your witnesses against the rules before you print. Everything happens in your browser — names and dates of birth are never sent to a server.
What the form can't do is decide what is right for you. Statsforvalteren often sees fullmakter that only cover selling the home and paying bills, while the need later turns out to be greater. Think through what you want, talk to the people you choose, and see a lawyer if your situation is complicated — for example with children from an earlier relationship, a business, or disagreement in the family.
